U.N. officials, climate experts, environmental activists, and leaders of more than 100 nations gather in Copenhagen, Denmark for a two-week conference on climate change beginning 7 December.


The participants will try to reach a new international accord on reducing greenhouse gas emissions that would replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. But, questions remain about how much can be achieved and how any agreement would be implemented.

New goal might be out of reach without more donor funds, govt says.

The winner of the online Miss Landmine contest, Miss Battambang, Dos Sopheap, was announced Thursday on the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. She received 2,315 online votes.

PARTIES to the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty have formally approved Cambodia’s request to push back the deadline for clearing all antipersonnel mines by 10 years, though the government’s formal extension request asserts that “current productivity levels will not be sufficient” to meet the revised goal.

Leng Sochea, deputy secretary of the Cambodia Mine Action Authority [CMAA], on Thursday confirmed that the request had been approved Wednesday at the Summit on a Mine-Free World, which is being held this week in Cartagena, Colombia.

“Whether we completely clear all land mines in the country or not, it will depend on the money that we receive from the donor countries and other donors,” he said.

Ella Rose Corby, an aspiring model from Kingscliff near the NSW/Queensland border, stripped down for the cover of the November issue of alternative surfing title Stab.

In the photo Miss Corby, who won a competition to pose for the magazine, covers herself up with strategically placed arms and legs and her body is covered in words painted on by an artist.

The accompanying article, written by fellow competition winner Mike Jennings, discusses teen sexuality by using terms like “unspoiled form" and “hotter than fish grease”.

Jennings' article focused on how 16-year-old girls meant "danger to the adult male".
