Red shirts to rally Dec 27-28

Bangkok Post 23/12/2009
King Taksin was born on April 17, 1734. His coronation was on Dec 28, 1768.
The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) continued to its pressure on the government by announcing a mass gathering at Sanam Luang on Sunday and Monday, despite earlier promises of a temporary truce.

The UDD had earlier pledge not to stage another until after the New year.

Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, a core UDD leader, said the rally would start at 5pm and end at 11pm on each day.

It would be in celebration of the 275th bithday of King Taksin the Great, he said.

King Taksin was born on April 17, 1734. His coronation was on Dec 28, 1768.

Members of the June 24 Democratic group, Dan Siam group, Democratic Power group, Red Taksin group, labour unions and representatives of university students would join the event.

He said the mass gathering would be peaceful and asked the government not to obstruct it.

“Former PM’s office Minister Jakrapob Penkair will phone in to share his political opinions with the red-shirts," Mr Somyos said.

Mr Jakrapob is a fugitive, wanted by police on a charge of lese majeste.

Asked about the first year performance of the Abhisit administration, Mr Somyos said the red-shirt people group agrees with the results of Bangkok poll which showed that the government failed to pass the exam, receiving an average grade of only 3.87 out of ten.

He said the government was not sincere about restoring democracy and had failed to take legal action against leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy who led the yellow-shirted demonstrators to occupy Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports late last year.

Its determination to hunt fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra had led to a serious diplomatic row between Thailand and Cambodia, he said.

In related developments, about 100 red-shirts earlier on Wednesday rallied outside the office of the Election Commission to pressure it to recommend dissolution of the Democrat Party in connection with the 258 million baht donation.

Led by Arismant Pongruangrong, the protesters blocked the eastern gate of the EC offices.

They criticised the EC for not ruling against the Democrat Party, saying the commission had applied double-standards in earlier approving the dissolution of the People Power Party.

About 200 police were on hand to maintain law and order.

Earlier on Wednesday, about 500 UDD members led by Mr Arismant went to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and demanded the minister, Suwit Khunkitti, take legal action against Privy Councillor Surayud Chulanont.

The red-shirts accused Gen Surayud of encroaching on Khao Yai Thiang forest in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Chong district. They also called on the Forestry Department to produce proof that the former prime minister's house does not on the forest reserve as alleged.

The red-shirts submitted their petition letter to the minister via his secretary-general Atthasit Karnchanasinith.

After that they went to the Crime Suppression Department to call on police to take legal action against Gen Surayud, just as action had been taken against other local people punished for encroaching on the Khao Yai Thiang forest.
