EC asked to speed up donation case

The opposition Puea Thai Party on Thursday called for the Election Commission to decide on the 258-million-baht donation case against the Democrat Party as soon as possible, and in a straightforward manner without any hidden agenda.

The EC was also asked to apply the same standard in dealaing with the Democrat Party that was used to decide the dissolution cases against Thai Rak Thai and People Power parties.

The call was made by Puea Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit after EC chairman Apichart Sukhagghanond said on Wednesday he might not be able to decide the case against the Democrat Party this month.

The EC late last year resolved that Mr Apichart, in his capacity as the political party registrar, should decide whether to recommend the dissolution of the Democrat Party or dismiss the petition against it.

The Democrat Party is accused of illegally taking a 258 million baht donation from TPI Polene, a listed company, through a third party in defiance of the constitution, which prohibits a firm or an individual donating more than 10 million baht a year to a political party, and misusing the 29 million baht for political development allocated by the EC. The offences allegedly occurred in 2005.

Mr Prompong said Mr Apichart was only trying to drage the case by saying that he would set up another working group to re-examine it and come up with a conclusion while he himself would go through the 7,000-page investigation report.

If found to have contravened the constitution the Democrat Party could be dissolved.
