Three of the coalition parties will join hands in supporting the passage of constitutional amendments, Chart Thai Pattana Party chief adviser Banharn Silpa-archa said on Friday.
Mr Banharn said MPs of Chart Thai Pattana, Puea Pandin and Bhumjaithai parties will sign their names to a motion supporting changes to two sections of the constitution.
The parties believe the Democrat Party, led by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, is buying time and is reluctant to amend the constitution. Bhumjaithai leader and Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul has even threatened to defect from the Democrat camp if it does not take action on charter amendments.
The coalition parties want to see the amendment of Section 190, on the need for parliamentary approval for international treaties, and the change in the election of MPs from multi-seat to single-seat constituencies.
Mr Banharn said the proposing of the motion to amend the two parts of the constitution during the ordinary parliamentary session has nothing to do with the other coalition parties.
"We will file the motion once we have enough supporters," he said.
One fifth of the total number of MPs are needed in order to file a motion during the ordinary session.
"The prime minister wants to leave the matter with parliamentary procedure, then we will take the process from there," he said.
Asked if the work of the coalition government woud be affected if the Democrat Party does not agree with the idea, Mr Banharn said this has nothing to do with the work of the government.
He also told reporters that leaders of Puea Pandin Party have come to pay respects to him during the New Year celebration, and they said they would like to see reconciliation in the country, an aim which meets the wishes of the Chart Thai Pattana Party.
The Chart Thai Pattana and the Puea Pandin parties have given their word that they would support each other, he said.
